This is an astonishing piece of new architecture and engineering in the West Wing of the historic Grade 1 listed Somerset House.

I only had a few minutes to grab some pictures on a recent tour – including poking my camera into the central core of the staircase and taking blind photos – however you will see that this is an astonishing piece of engineering and one of the great architectural structures in London.

The tread structure of the stairs looks like the skeleton from some huge dinosaur however it is made of UHPC (ultra-high-performance-concrete) – used for the first time in a cantilevered staircase.
