Background

The London Underground sign is an iconic part of London, as much as the red London bus, the black taxi and the red telephone box.

The roundrel was designed by Edward Johnston around 1905 and along with the sans serif font which he also designed  (Johnstone typeface) was used for all the tube maps famously designed by Harry Beck.

Edward Johnston died 70 years ago today.
